CHAOS IN THE RING AS CARTER EFE BEATS SPEED DARLINGTON AND PHYNA BEATS NKECHI BLESSING

Chaos in the Ring at Balmoral Hall, Federal Palace Hotel, Victoria Island, Lagos, lived up to its name as the Independence Day celebrity boxing event ran late into the night and ended early Friday with knockouts, drama and controversy.

The biggest talking points came from two celebrity fights. Reality TV star Phyna, Josephina Otabor, knocked out actress Nkechi Blessing Sunday, while skit maker Carter Efe, Oderhohwo Joseph Efe, beat rapper Speed Darlington, Darlington Okoye, by technical knockout.

Punch reported that Carter Efe stopped Speed Darlington after the musician stopped moving in their four round bout. The referee stepped in to end the fight when Speed Darlington was no longer defending himself. Guardian reported that Carter Efe has now kept his celebrity boxing run going, after beating Portable in May 2026 by unanimous decision where all three judges scored it 30 to 27.

Before the fight, Speed Darlington was confident and taunted Carter Efe over the title belt. He said, “Be careful with that belt. Your belt is mine. Do not scratch it now.” At the press conference ahead of the event, he kicked a birthday cake meant for Carter Efe, which sparked tension between both camps.

Phyna and Nkechi Blessing also had their own heated buildup. The two traded words at the press conference. Phyna threw a raw egg at Nkechi, while Nkechi threw a plastic water bottle back. The tension carried into the ring and ended with Phyna knocking out Nkechi in their bout, a result that shocked many fans who expected a more even contest.

The drama was not limited to the fighters. During the walkouts, firecrackers set off from Efe’s side started a small fire in the hall which was quickly put out with extinguishers. Security had to intervene several times to calm supporters.

Promoter Dr Ezekiel Adamu of Balmoral Group admitted the event got out of hand.

He said, “We wanted chaos, but I never knew it would get to this. Henceforth, we will be taking more precautions so that it doesn’t get out of hand.”

In the main professional fight of the night, Ghana’s Seth Freezy Macbones Gyimah beat Nigeria’s Godday Zodsolo Appah by unanimous decision and took the WBO African Light Heavyweight Continental title. The fight was more technical than the celebrity bouts and showed the difference between pro boxing and entertainment boxing.

Chaos in the Ring was designed as a mix of entertainment and sport, bringing influencers, musicians and actors into the boxing ring. The Lagos edition on 1 October drew a huge crowd of young fans, celebrities and content creators. The hall was filled with lights, music and loud supporters chanting for their favourites.

Carter Efe has now become the face of Nigerian celebrity boxing. The skit maker, known for his comedy and streams, started boxing as entertainment but has taken it seriously, training regularly and calling out other entertainers. His win over Portable earlier this year gave him credibility and his win over Speed Darlington has added to that.

Speed Darlington, who is known for controversial statements and his Akpi persona, accepted the fight to prove a point but could not keep up with Carter Efe’s energy and movement. After the TKO, he was checked by medical staff and left the ring with his team.

Phyna’s win was equally big for her. The former Big Brother Naija winner has been trying to rebuild her public image after a tough year. Knocking out Nkechi Blessing, a popular Nollywood actress, gave her a moment to celebrate. Nkechi, who took the fight despite having little boxing experience, was praised for stepping into the ring.

Both Speed Darlington, Phyna and Nkechi Blessing trended on X in Nigeria after the event. Clips of the knockouts, the cake kick and the egg throwing went viral on Instagram and TikTok. Fans debated who should fight next, with names like VeryDarkMan, Portable and Laide being mentioned.

The event also highlighted the growing popularity of celebrity boxing in Nigeria. What started as a gimmick is now drawing sponsors and big venues. The Independence Day timing helped, as many young Nigerians wanted a fun way to celebrate.

Organisers said they will improve safety measures for the next edition, including stricter checks on items brought into the hall and better control of pyrotechnics. They also said medical support will be increased for celebrity fighters.

For now, Carter Efe and Phyna are the winners of the night. Carter Efe keeps his belt and bragging rights, while Phyna has a knockout to add to her story. Chaos in the Ring delivered exactly what it promised, chaos, entertainment and boxing in Lagos.
