JAMB BRINGS BACK CAPS, TELLS PUBLIC UNIVERSITIES TO FINISH ADMISSION BY OCTOBER 31
JAMB CAPS restored is relief for thousands of admission seekers. The Joint Admissions and Matriculation Board brought back its Central Admissions Processing System after a temporary disruption.
The board announced restoration on Monday September 28 2026 in a statement. It said CAPS has been fully restored and is now operational. It urged tertiary institutions to speed up admission exercises ahead of approved deadlines for 2026 2027 academic session. It also apologised to candidates and stakeholders for inconvenience caused by temporary interruption and appreciated patience and understanding.
With CAPS live again universities can process offers under new deadlines JAMB has published. Parents and candidates had worried glitch would drag session. Board said, “With CAPS back online, institutions are urged to accelerate their admission processes to recover lost time and meet the agreed admission deadlines.” It also advised candidates to promptly accept admission offers made to them through appropriate channels.
According to JAMB, public universities are required to conclude their admission exercises by October 31 2026, while private universities have until November 30 2026 to complete theirs. Other tertiary institutions including polytechnics and colleges of education are expected to conclude admission processes by December 31 2026. The deadlines apply to 2026 2027 admission exercise.
JAMB CAPS restored comes at same time as 2026 NECO SSCE results release. The board advised candidates who had been waiting for examination results to upload or verify credentials following release of NECO results. It said, “Following the release of the 2026 NECO SSCE results, candidates who previously awaited their results are advised to upload and or verify them promptly to ensure their credentials are available for consideration as institutions intensify their admission processes.” That step ensures O Level results are available for institutions when recommending candidates.
CAPS is JAMB electronic platform for managing admissions into Nigerian tertiary institutions. It enables institutions to recommend candidates for admission while allowing candidates to monitor and accept admission offers. It also allows candidates to accept or reject admission, check transfer approvals and monitor marketplace. Any outage quickly becomes national story because so many families plan year around those offers.
JAMB remains gatekeeper for tertiary entry. Over 1.9 million candidates sit UTME yearly. Universities cannot admit outside CAPS. If CAPS is down, recommendation and acceptance freeze. That was what happened last week before restoration. Complaints rose on social media with candidates unable to view admission status and institutions unable to push lists. Now board says system is back and dates are set.
Students should log in check their status and follow new calendar. Missing a CAPS window still costs a year. Advice is simple. Log into JAMB CAPS portal with registered email and password, check admission status, accept if offered, print admission letter, then proceed to school portal for screening. If awaiting result status was used during registration, upload NECO 2026 result at nearest JAMB CBT centre or accredited centre without delay. Upload also includes WAEC if applicable. Verify upload is reflecting on CAPS.
For institutions, JAMB said deadlines are agreed with stakeholders at policy meeting. Public universities face earliest deadline October 31 because they carry largest enrolment and need time for matriculation and academic calendar. Private universities have till November 30. Other institutions till December 31. Board urged schools to make up for time lost during disruption and ensure admission processes are completed within stipulated period.
JAMB has not framed outage as cyber attack in early reports. It simply said system is back and dates are set. No data breach was announced. Focus of statement is operational restoration and compliance with timelines.
The board also warned candidates against patronising admission agents who promise to influence CAPS. All admissions must go through CAPS. No cash payment to individual staff can secure admission outside system. Candidates are advised to use official channels and report extortion.
JAMB CAPS restored is therefore both technical fix and calendar reminder. Public universities October 31 2026, private universities November 30 2026, others December 31 2026. Candidates with NECO 2026 results should upload immediately. Candidates with offers should accept promptly.
For parents watching session, this means 2026 2027 academic calendar remains on track. Universities can now accelerate screening, release merit lists, process second batch, handle change of course and admit from marketplace. With CAPS live, next weeks will see surge in admission notifications.
