NOLLYWOOD FILM BLACK MARKET BREAKS GUINNESS WORLD RECORD WITH OVER 51,000 VIEWERS AT TAFWA BALEWA SQUARE LAGOS

Black Market Guinness World Record night happened on Saturday 26 September 2026 at Tafawa Balewa Square in Lagos.

More than 51,000 people packed the historic square for a single screening of the Nollywood crime thriller Black Market, officially setting a new Guinness World Record for the largest audience gathering ever recorded for a movie screening.

A Guinness World Records official confirmed the figure on the big screen during the event, turning what was billed as a premiere into a live verified world record the moment it was announced. FilmOne the film’s distributor made it official shortly after. The company wrote, “51,000+ people. One screen. One moment that just made history.” It added, “We’ve officially set a WORLD RECORD for the Largest Audience Gathering Ever for a Movie Screening. Nigeria, we didn’t just watch a movie. WE MADE HISTORY.”

The record was built from the ground up as an official Guinness attempt. Organisers led by Rixel Studios in collaboration with FilmOne Studios, Signet Ring Studios and Switch Visuals Production targeted 50,000 simultaneous viewers to overtake the existing benchmark of 43,624 set in 2015 when the Philippine film Felix Manalo drew crowds at the Philippine Arena for its Iglesia Ni Cristo backed premiere. No African film had ever held the title. As of Saturday night one now does.

Black Market Guinness World Record came with two numbers. Lagos Deputy Governor Obafemi Hamzat who was present announced 64,000 people attended the event. Guinness World Records said the qualifying figure was 51,000 based on viewers who remained from the beginning to the end of the movie. That qualifying rule is why the official record is 51,000 plus, not the total headcount in the square. The announcement triggered loud cheers, celebrations and fireworks.

Getting there took a full day of build up. Gates opened at 2pm with long queues stretching toward the TBS roundabout hours before doors opened. Red carpet started around 3pm. The main screening ran between 7pm and 8.30pm. The event was staged less like a film premiere and more like a festival with music, food, games and brand activations from partners including MTN, Puma, Oraimo and Shuttlers running alongside the red carpet as attendees trickled in from early afternoon.

The film itself is produced by Nora Awolowo. It is directed by Fatimah Binta Gimsay and co written by Gimsay and Abdul Tijani Ahmed. It is a crime thriller that follows five market women involved in a cross border fuel smuggling operation whose lives spiral into chaos after one of their daughters is kidnapped and a rival gang gets involved. The story uses market women and black market fuel trade to explore economic hardship and organised crime.

The cast includes Linda Ejiofor Suleiman as Zimuzo, Scarlet Gomez as Aramide, Omowunmi Dada as Adesua, Lateef Adedimeji, Uzor Arukwe, Ibrahim Yekini known as Itele D Icon, Teniola Aladese, Susan Pwajok, Taye Arimoro, Mike Afolarin, Tomiwa Tegbe, Andrew Yaw Bunting and Shamz Garuba. The ensemble drew Nollywood presence on the carpet.

Lagos Deputy Governor Obafemi Hamzat and Commissioner for Tourism Arts and Culture Toke Benson were reported present. Other stars spotted included Kunle Remi, Stan Nze, Gabriel Afolayan, Kunle Afolayan and Real Warri Pikin. The Lagos State Ministry of Tourism Arts and Culture supported the staging.

For Nollywood this is a logistics win as much as a creative one. One square. One night. A record that stood almost 11 years. Tafawa Balewa Square is a national landmark that has hosted independence celebrations, concerts and political rallies but never a verified world record film audience at this scale. Pulling 51,000 simultaneous viewers required crowd control, giant LED screen engineering, sound coverage across an open field and independent counting to satisfy Guinness verification.

The previous holder Felix Manalo was backed by a religious organisation with a built in crowd of 43,624 at the 55,000 capacity Philippine Arena on 4 October 2015. Black Market beat that with a general audience who queued in Lagos traffic, paid or registered, and stayed through the full runtime to qualify. That is why the premiere is trending beyond film pages into general news, tourism and Lagos pride conversations.

Black Market is expected to move to cinemas after the record screening. The premiere has already delivered what most campaigns cannot buy, global press mention as a world record holder. For Rixel Studios and FilmOne it is proof that Nollywood can mobilise at scale outside the traditional cinema hall.

On social media the teaser line travelled fast. Over 51,000 people watched Black Market in one Lagos square and smashed a 2015 world record. Nollywood just made history.
